{"id":1325,"date":"2011-10-04T11:18:58","date_gmt":"2011-10-04T19:18:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/samstones.org\/WordPress1\/?p=1325"},"modified":"2011-10-04T11:21:53","modified_gmt":"2011-10-04T19:21:53","slug":"shawangunk-mountains-new-paltz-ny","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/samstones.org\/WordPress1\/?p=1325","title":{"rendered":"Shawangunk Mountains &#8211; New Paltz, NY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hi, John.<\/p>\n<p>I placed the Sam Stone above the second anchor\/belay point of Three Pines in the Gunks. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Shawangunk Mountains (aka the Gunks) are just outside of New Paltz, NY and are a popular climbing destination for rock climbers of all levels from all over the country, from beginners (like me) to pros.&nbsp; Three Pines is an easy climbing route with a beautiful view.&nbsp; It has three pitches, meaning the route is broken up in three sections.&nbsp; The lead climber establishes a route, sets up an anchor, and belays the second climber up to the anchor point.&nbsp; That&#39;s the first pitch.&nbsp; Then the lead climber continues up the route, sets up a second anchor, and belays the second climber up again.&nbsp; That&#39;s the second pitch.&nbsp; This continues until the climbers reach the top.&nbsp; Then depending on the route, we can take the walking path back down to the base or rappel down.&nbsp; For Three Pins, we rappelled down.&nbsp; It&#39;s faster and more fun as long as you aren&#39;t afraid of heights!&nbsp; The picture out from the ledge where I placed the Sam Stone cannot truly capture the how breathtaking the view is.&nbsp; I thought this was a good place for a Sam Stone because, from what I read about Sam, rock climbing seems like the kind of thing he would have loved if he tried it, especially if it gave him access to these kind of views. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/samstones.org\/WordPress1\/wp-content\/uploads\/sam%20stone1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"sam stone1.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/samstones.org\/WordPress1\/wp-content\/uploads\/sam%20stone2.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"sam stone2.jpg\" \/> <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/samstones.org\/WordPress1\/wp-content\/uploads\/view%20from%203%20pines.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"view from 3 pines.jpg\" \/> <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hi, John.
