These funds will be used to support the following activities on an ongoing basis: Sam Cohn Bolton Valley Snowboard Scholarship Sam absolutely loved snowboarding. He was up at Bolton every possible moment. The Sam Cohn Bolton Valley Snowboard Scholarship will enable one kid a year to be up on the mountain doing what Sam loved. This scholarship will be awarded to a Mount Mansfield student who the faculty and staff feel would benefit from being up on the mountain. The scholarship covers all equipment rentals and lift passes for the season. The selection criteria and selection process is still being firmed up and will be documented here by the end of the school year. Sam Cohn Musical Soul Annual Guitar Giveaway Sam had a musical soul. Sam could play many instruments, but he especially loved playing the guitar. He was just as happy playing Hardcore on his electric as he was playing Bach or Albinez on his classical guitar. The Sam Cohn Musical Soul Annual Guitar Giveaway will allow one Mount Mansfield kid a year to buy the guitar of their dreams. To be eligible for the guitar giveaway, a student has to be nominated by a friend or teacher who will write a short paragraph on why there person has a musical soul. A committee of teachers will then choose a set of finalists from this list. The Winner will then be chosen by chance to allow Sam an opportunity to vote. The winner will then go to Advanced Music in Burlington to choose the guitar. The only requirement is that the winner keeps and plays the guitar him or herself. The guitar is not for resale. The selection process is up to the principal and staff of MMU.
Sam Cohn Cool Kid Camp Abenaki Scholarship Sam was all about fun. Every summer he and his brothers spent a week or two at Camp Abenaki on North Hero enjoying the lake, the outdoors and being with friends. Last year he reached his Adokenack in honor of having been at the camp for five straight years. He was really proud of that. The Sam Cohn Cool Kid Camp Abenaki Scholarship will enable several deserving kids to attend Abenaki every year. Because this is need based, the scholarship recipients’ names will be held confidential. There will however be a “Sam Cohn Cool Camper’ award given out to the Adokenack camper each year who the councilors feel has the most fun spirit. The selection process is still being firmed up and will be documented here by the end of the school year.
Talent Skate Park Scholarship – Sam loved skateboarding.. and he really loved Talent Skate Park Talent recreated itself a few years back as a non-profit community. With the help of our friends Hannah and Dave at Talent, Sam’s fund now provides a full scholarship to several kids to the Talent Summer Skate Camp. Our Deep thanks to Hannah, Dave and all the staff at Talent for making this work .
We also used to support the following until Rock Camp ended..
Sam Cohn Rock Camp Scholarship Sam really loved playing music with other people. He played guitar, bass and drums in several bands over the last few years. He really got his start playing music with others at the Rock Camp program in Burlington’s. Rock Camp is run each summer by the Burlington Parks and Recreation. The kids come together for a week and form bands of all types from Reggae to Hardcore. They learn about different style of music, learn the basics of song writing, performance skills and get to hang out with some excellent musicians. The Sam Cohn Rock Camp Scholarship will fund several students and councilors tuition to the program each year. Because this is need based, the scholarship recipients names will be held confidential. There will however be a “Sam Cohn Musical Soul’ award given out to the Rock Camp camper each year who the councilors feel has the most fun spirit. The selection process is still being firmed up and will be documented here by the end of the school year.
