My friend, Jimmy Vaughn, gave me a Sam stone and I took it with me to
my favorite place on earth: Vivekananda Rock on Wellesley Island. The
picture attached is a tree, which was the site of a powerful
meditation for Swami Vivekananda.”It said that on his last day August
7, 1895 at the Thousand Islands the Swami went into the back woods to
meditate and froze solid in meditation and remained oblivious to
torrential rain and is said to have achieved nirvikalpa Samadhi. (Page

“He wrote from there to a friend:
“I am free, my bonds are cut, what do I care whether this body goes
or does not go? I have a truth to teach—I am a child of God. And He
that gave me truth will send me fellow workers from the earth’s
bravest and best.†Page 105-106

This is the hospital where Sam ‘s organs were donated..
Sam died there.. and four people lived on because of him
I still don’t know how to talk about this place.

On my trip to NC, I visited the gardens at Duke University. A NC
artist, Patrick Dougherty, creates beautiful installations out of
sustainably harvested sticks. I placed a samstone inside his
installation at the Duke Gardens. Here’s a link to his website and a
photo of the installation.

Hey John –
Sorry to fire off to your work email – not sure I have your personal one.
We were down on Cape Cod a couple of weeks ago and the kids made rocks for the http://thekindnessrocksproject.com/ we thought of Sam so we had him join the collection so we made our own SamStone.
The SamStone was left at Sandy Neck, just off the parking lot, on the sand dune at the edge of the beach.
Attached are some pictures including the view!
The kids are Ava (oldest), Hadley (middle), and Ben (little).
Have a great 4th!

Hello, I just found a samstone in top of an old Castle, in Scottland,
near Kilmartin. It was on one of the high walls, outside of the
allowed area, so it must have been a climber, too 🙂
I’ll put it somewhere nice when I spot the right place ! Bye, this
idea I really like.

Found it after a skyline trail hike at the top of Mount Hunger. My
friend Mac has decided to take the stone and move to Carter Mt. In New
Hampshire. Mac, my brother Alex, and I feel the love.
