Maho Bay – St John USVI

Sam Stone # 1 – Maho Bay Eco-resort, Maho Bay, St John USVI.

This is most beautiful place I’ve ever been in my life. St John is
mostly undeveloped, a large portion of it being a National
Park. Even when the island is booked to capacity, you have large
expanses of pristine white beach all to yourself, especially if
you’re willing to walk, drive, or catch a cab to some of the more
remote beaches. I spent a week here with my family and three other
families from the Huntington/Richmond area. We stayed in a cabins
(more like canvas-covered tree-houses) just up the hill from Little
Maho Bay. There were no bugs to speak of, lots of lizards, and huge
terrestrial hermit crabs that the staff referred to as “the clean-up
crew”. The hermit crabs apparently eat anything, and seem to be the
dominant life form on the island. The temperature ranged from 72 to
85F every day (and night). The water was turquoise blue, and filled
with technicolor fishes and cool coral formations. The dining room
at Maho Bay Resort overlooks Little Maho Bay (Big Maho Bay is around
the corner to the left). I’ve attached a photo taken from the bar
(during one of the rare daytime rain showers), looking through the
dining room, toward Little Maho. This faces the sunset, which makes
for a pretty special dinner experience (the food was fabulous,
too). A second photo, taken from the same spot, but facing 90
degrees to the left, shows some of the massive collection of conch
shells that guests have left up in the rafters of the bar over the
years (probably in exchange for free drinks). If you look where the
rafters meet the post, you will spot a familiar name.
