I was given one of these stones by a stranger while wandering the playa at Burning Man at about 3 a.m. on thursday morning. My name is Sam too (the person who gave me the stone had no idea) and it caught me completely off guard. The next day, I had pretty much forgotten about the stone, but I felt compelled to go visit the temple, which I had not seen yet. When I got there, in the face of all the love that had been left there for those that had been lost, I broke down, and cried in public for the first time in my life. I saw myself in the lives of those who had been remembered by their friends, the love and energy they had put into their lives, and in the aspirations and prayers for their own lives that thousands of burners had written in permanent marker onto the wood. Only after I composed myself did I notice that there were Sam Stones all around me- although I still had no idea what it meant. Now I do, and it fits perfectly with what I felt that day- one of the most profo!
und feelings of connection I have ever felt. Here's to you, Sam. Because even though I will never meet you, the love that you brought into this world found its way to me, even in the middle of the night, in the desert. You must have been an amazing kid.
